The X-Project 1.0 was hailed as the top-end mountain bike shoe in the Pearl Izumi range. Given this expert approval and widespread rider popularity, the design challenge in the next iteration was to make the best even better. See the process ideation and final X-Project PRO product in this design story.
Because the Elite Road 4 was already ultra lightweight, carbon-plated and equipped with a Boa closure system, the ask with the next generation was focused less toward performance improvements and more toward a shift in aesthetic.
It’s not often we get the chance to assist in the design of three consecutive generations of the same model, however, with the HOKA Vanquish 3, the rare pleasure was proudly ours.
When helping to re-imagine the Pearl Izumi Tri Fly Octane 3, we were challenged to make incremental improvements that would elevate the beloved triathlon cycling shoe, but without disrupting what made it so popular in the first place.
In an effort to attract ALL runners, we were approached with the opportunity to design the HOKA One One Speed Instinct, a uniquely low profile trail runner that offers the signature HOKA ride, but without all the maximal fluff.
Months after the design, build and race of our team bike in Australia, we were honored to see Motorcycle.com post our unique story for the world to see. Read the full story and watch the video.
Now constructed with a slightly wider last (for a more spacious ride and increased toe splay), as well as, a more flexible upper for an improved form fit, the new HOKA One One Clifton 3 has earned the recognition of “Best Upgrade of 2016” by Competitor Magazine.
On the heels of its “Best Ride” predecessor, HOKA One One considered consumer feedback in developing the new Clifton 3. Maintaining many of the signature elements of the former fan favorite, we collaborated with the brand to implement improvements on the next generation that now offers the HOKA promise in one package.
The Pearl Izumi X-Alp Drift family has always been the perfect tool for hot or wet rides alike, so the newest generation would need to maintain that signature comfort, while also enhancing the breathable benefits and minimizing the bulky materials adding needless weight.
HOKA One One is a specialty running brand that has managed to carve a reputable niche in a competitive category. However, they recently approached us with the opportunity to design the Tor Summit WP hiking boot, as an avenue for introducing their lightweight RMAT material to another active arena.
A team of relentless builders, tinkerers, testers and tuners, our work is ever influenced by the way we choose to play. In this short film, see how we approach the design-build, test and tune of an XR69 tribute motorcycle, as raced at the Philip Island Classic.

After several seasons of designing snow boots and hikers for Viking Footwear, we were tasked with updating their most popular trail running model, the Apex. Collaborating closely with the Norwegian outdoor brand, we designed the Apex 2 GTX — a fast trail running shoe with all of the necessary components to perform at the highest level in the harsh Scandinavian environment.
HOKA’s Vanquish 2 was awarded Competitor Magazine’s “Editor’s Choice” Award. Because we had the chance to collaborate on the footwear design of both the Vanquish 1 and 2, it is particularly rewarding to see this upgrade receive such high praise from such a revered organization.
Following the conclusion of the 2016 Phillip Island Classic, CycleWorld Magazine recently posted a recap of the rigorous racing events. Eirik Nielsen, the founder of GHOST WORKS, finished 18th overall … but that’s just a fraction of the adventure. See more pictures and read the full story.
In honor of having recently celebrated our first anniversary as our new identity, we thought it would be an interesting endeavor to re-visit the rigorous process of the re-brand — from Lund Nielsen Design, to GHOST WORKS. To better understand the entire creative process, watch the full video now.

Building upon the heritage of the growing Mafate family, HOKA One One’s new Mafate 4 enlists signature elements of cushion and support from the past, but confidently vaults these traits to the next level. Given the chance to re-imagine the next generation of the popular model, the aim was to pay tribute to the comfort and stability that brought it to prominence, but add improvements that would enhance performance and protection.
The Pearl Izumi Pro Leader family has long been the brand’s most prized road riding experience, so implementing improvement would require some advanced constructional innovations in order to justify the title of Pro Leader 3.
An update to the popular Stinson Trail, the Stinson ATR is an all-terrain running shoe that features an oversized CMEVA midsole, providing runners with the signature HOKA cushioning and protection that is versatile enough to excel on both the road and the trail.
As one of our most established clients, we’ve designed many boots for Viking Footwear that were aptly engineered to combat the harsh Scandinavian climate, however, when tasked to maintain that same level of elite protection, but without the added weight of leather in the upper, the Gaupe Light would need to be approached with a more tactful tilt.
Helly Hansen just announced the release of their new Rohkun trail running shoe, a functional-yet-fashionable Norwegian design that we were proud to be a part of. Though it won’t be available until fall, you can preview it now in this latest Design Story.
Built to endure the rigors of an ultra marathon, the original HOKA Mafate is maximally stacked with ounce-adding cushioning. In an effort to utilize this protection, but with an eye toward performance, we collaborated with HOKA to develop the Mafate Speed, a fast trail running shoe with all the protection necessary for the treacherous miles, but with substantial weight savings for peak speeds.
Born by the sea and raised by the mountains, Helly Hansen has a rich tradition of protective outdoor gear, aptly suited to weather the extreme conditions of Scandinavia. Continuing with this tradition, we collaborated to create the Odin Flow Hiker, a versatile but sturdy hiking boot for both recreational and advanced hikers, light and heavy adventures alike.
As a proud “Top of the Mountain” brand, Dynafit is best known for its top-quality gear for the dedicated mountain athlete. When approached to design their newest trail running shoe, we collaborated to create the Pantera, an extreme alpine running shoe with all the support, cushion and claw-like traction necessary to climb and/or “bomb” down mountain trails, regardless of the treacherous terrain.
When it comes to cushioning, the Bondi series is considered HOKA’s signature model. Therefore, when given the opportunity to collaborate with the brand on designing the next generation, it was less about remedial aesthetic upgrades and more about solution-based improvements that would functionally elevate the Bondi 4, their poster child for comfort.
One of the biggest challenges facing a dedicated Scandinavian runner is the ultra harsh winters that greatly hinder the ability to run outdoors, all year round. As a solution, we worked closely with Viking Footwear to develop the Vertex Mid — a fast trail running shoe, engineered to successfully keep the extreme elements OUT and keep the brave athletes ON the trails, no matter the (seemingly) impossible conditions.
Competitor.com has just released their 2015 Running Gear Guide for road running shoes and amongst this elite group of makes and models, two of our HOKA One One designs were featured — the Constant and the Bondi 4. This brand is clearly making maximal waves and we are proud to have contributed functional designs that are now being recognized amongst the industry’s best of the best.
Across our portfolio, there is not a more intriguing project than the Fox Instinct moto boot. All at once, it gifted us the pleasure of living within one of our deepest passions (moto) while brutally challenging us to question all that we thought we knew about the subject. Combining rich aesthetics and boundless technicality, the Instinct was a hearty design task that now stands as one of our proudest final products.
When PUMA approached us to take on the task of a golf shoe, we were excited about the opportunity to challenge the norm and stretch the typical golf shoe into areas it had never been taken before. Par was not going to cut it. Below you’ll find a discussion of the process involved in developing the PUMA BioDrive golf shoe and how the overarching mantra of “out with the old, in with the new” yielded a true game changer in the world of golf.
The HOKA Constant road running shoe employs a late stage Meta-Rocker and an applied geometry of both EVA and RMAT®, combining to create Ultrasize cushioning for runners seeking a supportive and smooth ride on the roads.
Boasting its signature over-sized cushioning, while remaining unbelievably lightweight, the HOKA Odyssey is a maximal road running shoe for those athletes seeking a simple, smooth and stable ride on the roads.
The Vanquish road running shoe is the most responsive performance model in the HOKA road family. Using applied geometry in the midsole, the EVA top-layer provides signature HOKA cushioning, while the RMAT® body provides an optimal blend of underfoot support and a responsive ride.
Lund Nielsen Design has evolved. Our process is similar but has manifested in a new, elevated form. Our team and capabilities have expanded, inviting us to explore who we are as designers – who we are as a unit – and who we are to our clients. As this emerging vision has shifted shape, so has our name, into a new identity that fittingly reflects this transformation from a single individual, to a growing entity of Ghost Designers. Incognitos. An Invisible Force – appearing and disappearing as necessary.
